Date:4/2/2022
Description:
On February 4th, the European Commission delegation led by Director-General for Structural Reform Support Mr. Mario Nava visited Lefke/Lefka and the former Cyprus Mining Corporation' (CMC) mining area and hold a discussion on the challenges facing, their inter-communal impacts and the possible solutions proposed to restore the area. The inter-communal aspect of the visit and discussion was vital, and crucial in understanding how the EC can concretely support the issues of the two sides/communities.
During this field visit the Director-General Mr. Mario Nava and the European Commission delegation was accompanied by a group of Greek and Turkish Cypriot experts, the Technical Committee on Environment, UNDP and the European Union. Together they visited the abandoned mine and facilities to see first-hand the environmental disaster of the area and help to move forward to a viable solution-oriented action plan. The visit was closed with a fruitful round the table discussion, highlighting the insights and concerns of the scientific community and civil society on this high priority issue. The European Commission delegation verified that all concerns have been heard and noted and they will ensure a proper follow up and try their best to support all efforts.
