Keynote speakers: Dr. Iris Charalambidou
On April 13th, 2022, the co-chairs of the Technical Committee on Environment were invited to participate on an Inter-communal workshop on Wildfire risk in the Cyprus Buffer Zone.
A group of almost 40 researchers, forest technicians and environmentalists from 17 different countries gathered for this workshop in Nicosia. Building on previous research (Cooperation for the Prevention of Wildfires within the Buffer Zone Report, UNDP-ACT in 2013), different interests in and initiatives on wildfire risk in the Buffer Zone were discussed. For a better understanding of the localities, the UN granted a visit to the Nicosia Airport in the afternoon. The day concluded with an interactive discussion, where workshop participants identified opportunities for creating a fire resilient landscape within the Buffer Zone.
You can find more on the conclusions and remarks of the workshop in the report attached.
